Junior Blind of America

Junior Blind of America is a nonprofit organization based in Los Angeles that offers programs and services to help blind and visually impaired people of all ages become more independent. Their Infant-Family Program is specifically designed for babies ages birth to three years who are blind with multiple disabilities. In this program, therapists make in-home visits to help families understand the impact of visual impairment in relation to other disabilities on their child's overall development. The therapists provide individualized assessment, intervention, education, resource, advocacy, support and recreation services to meet the needs of each child and family.

The South Bay Quilting Guild is made up of a group of women who have used their love of quilting to help these infants and babies. Since about 1989, the guild has donated their talent and time to Junior Blind of America. Twice a year, the guild members drop off a new batch of quilts to Junior Blind of America for the Infant-Family Program. When the therapists meet a new family for the first time, they give them one of the quilts as a gift from Junior Blind.

The guild has worked to develop special quilts for Junior Blind that are either high-contrast in color, which is easier for babies with impaired vision to see, or are multi-textured, made out of fabrics that will appeal to the babies' sense of touch.

Since 1953, Junior Blind of America has remained deeply committed to helping blind and visually impaired people of all ages achieve an essential cornerstone of personal dignity--independence. To learn more, please visit www.juniorblind.org.
