Ami Simms, the force behind the Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative, was named 2005 Teacher of the Year by The Professional Quilter magazine.
Ami's mother is one of the 4.5 million Americans with Alzheimer's, a disease that slowly and relentlessly robs its victims of their memory. There is no cure. The Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative was begun by Ami to raise awareness and fund research.
AAQI has two parts--the traveling 50-quilt exhibit Alzheimer's: Forgetting Piece by Piece, and a program called Priority: Alzheimer's Quilts, named for the urgent need for research funding and the containers used to ship the quilts to their new owners. Quilts auctioned on Simms' Web page (www.amisimms.com) are no larger than 9" x 12" and will fit inside a cardboard USPS mailer without folding. All profits from the Initiative, over $5,000 to date, are earmarked for Alzheimer's research.
Ami says, "This disease touches many families. The Initiative gives people a way to channel their grief and frustration into something positive."
