Crochet Legacy
Posted on Sep. 28, 2007 by Ann White
A friend recently shared a touching story with me. Her great grandmother came to the USA around the turn of the last century as a new bride. Although she brought with her only a few possessions, she had a wonderful skill her mother had taught her; she could crochet magnificent lace. As soon as they were settled in their new home, she began to plan and create an elegant bedspread of her own design. It would be made of motifs, each beginning with an exquisite Irish rose.
But the life of an early settler was not easy; one child arrived, then another and another. Soon she had a house full of children and an elderly mother-in-law to care for. The crochet got put away, and for some reason or another, she never got around to finishing her beautiful bedspread. My friend’s mother said she would occasionally take out the blocks she had completed, look at them for a while and then carefully pack them away again. After she passed away, the blocks remained in a trunk for many years. Then one day my friend and her sister discovered them. They were charmed by the delicate lace and asked their mother about them. She shared the story, and said if they would like, they could have the blocks. As my friend and her sister counted the blocks, they made a startling discovery; there were exactly the same number of finished blocks as there were members of their family! They took the blocks home and washed, blocked and framed them. For Christmas, each descendant received a gift from a lovely lady many of them had never known, but who lives on through the legacy of her beautiful crocheted lace.
