Adapting Crochet
Posted on Aug. 31, 2007 by Brenda Stratton
Have you ever adapted a purchased crochet pattern to make it different from the original? If so, you know it can be a lot of fun. If you haven’t, be adventurous and give it a try --- you’re in for a treat! Some ways you can adapt existing crochet patterns include: - Use double strands of yarn and a doily pattern to make a rug.
- Work an afghan pattern in a lighter weight of yarn to produce a baby afghan.
- Use a classic sweater pattern and make it in self-striping yarn to give it some pizzazz. Or crochet just the front and back in solid color yarn, and the sleeves, neck and ribbing in self-striping yarn … or vice versa!
- Use your favorite edging pattern to make a choker. Make it just long enough to fit around your neck, and then attach a closure to the ends. Of course, adding beads will really make it classy. Or, do it in reverse and adapt a choker pattern to fit on your favorite towel!
- Work an appropriately sized afghan motif in cotton yarn for a pretty dishcloth.
- Crochet a thread motif in medium-weight yarn for a light and lacy afghan.
There are many ways you can have fun with crochet. Your only limit is your own imagination. If you run out of ideas, brainstorm with your friends!
