Definitions: Variegated, Ombre and Space-dyed Yarns

Posted on Apr. 30, 2007 by Brenda Stratton

Have you ever wondered what the difference is between variegated and ombre yarn?

The colors in variegated yarn change from one color to another, such as light pink to white to light blue.

However, ombre yarn is all one color but dyed in varying shades such as off-white, light beige and light brown.

Someone asked me the other day what the definition of spaced-dyed yarn is. At the time, I couldn’t recall the exact information and had to look it up. I thought you might enjoy knowing, too. In space-dyed yarn, the yarn is dyed in one color for a specific length and in other colors for other lengths. Then, the sequence is repeated.
