Remember when I said I needed to get organized? Well, that's really true for my photos. It wasn't until my future sister-in-law asked if I had a copy of a particular picture of her and my brother that I realized exactly how disorganized my photos were! (Needless to say, I did not find the picture, though I am still looking—two weeks later.)
I know I'm not the only person out here who has this same problem, so I did a little Internet research and thought I'd share a few tips I picked up.
1. Throw out the ones you don't need or like as soon as you get them back from the developer. Do you really need to hang onto the print of your mom with her mouth hanging open or the three pictures that were taken while your camera was rattling around in your purse?
2. Label your photos. In three years will you really remember the name of your best friend's roommate from college? Or where you were when you took the picture?
3. Separate your photos from your negatives and keep the negatives in a fire-safe box. That way, if you lose your photos, you haven't really lost them.
4. Put photos together by year. Even if you don't have time to get any farther than that, you have a good idea about where to find certain pictures. If you want to get fancy, put them in by month and separate them by an index card of some sort.
Even if all you do is put your non-frame-worthy photos organized this way in a shoe box or photo box, you'll still be able to find what you need. And I think even I can follow something this simple!
