History

Posted on Nov. 8, 2006 by Kris Frye

I am a history and trivia nut--which I can probably credit mostly to my father. He instilled a love of history in me from the time I was very little by taking us to many historical sites. There's nothing quite like standing in the places you studied in history class. I've walked the battlefields at Gettysburg, laughed as my brother stormed Redoubt #9 at Vicksburg, walked through the homes of some of our greatest presidents and even stood in the same room where treaties to end the Civil War were signed.
That said, it shouldn't surprise you that I have all kinds of little odd facts bouncing around in my brain. There are many fascinating facts that happened in history today: November 8. For example:

  • Exactly 213 years ago, in 1793, the French Revolutionary government opened the Louvre to the public.
  • Milton Bradley, of board game fame, was born in 1836, and Bram Stoker, the Irish novelist who wrote Dracula, was born in 1847.
  • In 1864, Abraham Lincoln was re-elected as president over George McClellan by an overwhelming majority. In 1892, Grover Cleveland was elected over Benjamin Harrison to win the second of his two nonconsecutive terms as president, and in 1960, JFK was elected over Nixon to be the youngest president.
  • Doc Holiday, the gunslinger and gambler, died in 1887, and Norman Rockwell, the famous Saturday Evening Post artist, died in 1978.
  • In 1895, the Xray was invented.
  • Days of Our Lives debuted on NBC on this day in 1965.
  • Led Zeppelin’s fourth album (the one with “Stairway to Heaven”) was released in 1971.
